The Highlands

Scotland

The Highlands is a historic region of Scotland. The area is sometimes referred to as the "Scottish Highlands".
The area is very sparsely populated, with many mountain ranges dominating the region, and includes the highest mountain in the British Isles, Ben Nevis.

There's lots of things to see and do across the Highlands. As well as being a wonderful holiday destination the Highlands are home to a quarter of a million people living in communities spread throughout the area. From the vibrant city of Inverness to remote crofting communities and sparsely populated islands.
What these communities do have in common and something that is particularly apparent to visitors is that they are all part of an area which is culturally distinct - influenced by our often violent history, a strong cultural heritage, and the Gaelic language.

The natural world is also different - the varied climate leads to a wide range of habitats and the relatively sparse population makes this the premier area in Britain, if not Europe for wildlife.

The Scottish Highlands has so much to offer.... spectacular mountains, waterfalls, tumbling rivers and mirror-like lochs are bounded by crystal-clear seas scattered with magical islands. You'll find castles, museums, steam trains, boat trips, gardens, whisky, ancient monuments, arts and crafts galore and visitor centres featuring subjects as diverse as wildlife, history, heritage and even monsters!

If you visit the North Highlands you will see there really isn’t any place on earth like it. In Caithness, Ross-shire and Sutherland you will find unspoiled Scottish scenery, deserted beaches, rare wildlife and plants, action and adventure, history and science. That could be why, despite our location at the extreme, visitors can’t help coming back.
