The Pilates method of body conditioning is a system of stretching and strengthening exercises developed over ninety years ago by Joseph H. Pilates. It enhances body control, corrects posture and alignment, strengthens and tones muscles, provides flexibility and balance, unites body and mind focusing in breathing and creates a more streamlined shape.
Joseph Pilates was born in Germany in 1880. He was a sickly child, plagued by rickets, asthma, and rheumatic fever. His drive to overcome this ailments led him to explode and practice bodybuilding, gymnastics, diving and was greatly influenced by ancient Greek and Roman regiments. This rich background provided him with the foundation to innovate a system that he developed through his life. He call his method "the art of contrology", to highlight his unique approach of using the mind to master the muscles.
During First World War, he began working with non-ambulatory patients. He attached springs to the hospitals beds to support the patients' ailing limbs while he worked with them. These spring-based exercises became the basis for the apparatus Pilates would later design to be in conjunction with the matwork.
Pilates method, with more than ninety decades of success, stands out as a tried-and-true formula of wisdom and unwavering results, recommended for all ages and fitness levels, from the beginner to the most advances. Pilates was developed to created a healthy body, a healthy mind and a healthy life.
